Although Plymouth, Massachusetts, will never be confused with a major metropolis, it has a surprisingly thorough and utterly delicious culinary scene. Being a tourist town, many folks think of restaurants that are lacking in taste and heavy on the wallet. Not Plymouth though. From gastropubs to upscale dining, seafood spots to ethnic restaurants, Plymouth’s got something for every appetite. One of the newest restaurants on the Plymouth scene is Roll Street Tavern.
The name is Roll Street Tavern even though it’s on Main Street! The name “roll” refers to the way each menu item is presented, in a roll. Not a bread roll, but a roll-up a la eggroll. Each course, apps, entrees, and desserts, all take on roll form. It could pigeonhole an establishment with a theme such as that, but at Roll Street Tavern, each menu item is well executed.
Given the current COVID status, my visit to Roll Street Tavern involved taking out, but I totally see this place as a spot to grab a local beer or two (they have Plymouth breweries including Second Wind and Mayflower on tap) while splitting a few rolls to share. I’ll have to wait for my dinner inside Roll Street, but am happy that their takeout did not disappoint.
My Dinner at Roll Street Tavern
My older son, who tends to be picky, proclaimed his meal to be one of the best he’s had. I opted for the chicken chimichanga egg roll. Two rolls come in one serving with each egg roll a decent size. Between two people, my suggestion would be to split three rolls. All of the fixings of a chimichanga were stuffed into the egg roll. In each bite, the flavor came through without any bite being all just roll.
In addition to the egg rolls, another concept that is “on a roll” is their lettuce wraps. These replace traditional salads with proteins such as lobster, steak, or chicken inside the lettuce wrap. My wife chose one of these which was definitely perfect for lighter fare compared to the chimichanga. Spring rolls are also on the menu.
Although there is no kid’s menu, pizza and hot dog rolls fit the bill. Danny ordered the cheese pizza roll. It’s similar to a longer mozzarella stick with a thicker coating. It came with four of them per order which meant I was able to snag one of his. Dipping in a marinara sauce made this an awesome combination which I would definitely order for myself. There are also puffs with fillings such as buffalo chicken and desserts including cannoli and something called Matzo crack, which is chocolate and caramel baked into Matzo unleavened bread.
That’s a wrap…. or a roll
Roll Street Tavern is a fine addition to the culinary scene in Plymouth. For now, I’ll be ordering takeout from them but am looking forward to the day when I can sip a Second Wind while splitting a few rolls in the restaurant. Roll Street Tavern is located at 35 Main Street in Plymouth.
