Favorite Take Out Spots in Plymouth

Plymouth, Massachusetts has an amazing selection of restaurants. From seafood to pad thai, fancy dining to dive bars, this town has a truly fantastic culinary scene. I moved to Plymouth from Rockland, MA whose restaurant choices were lacking. Prior to that, I lived in Newton and Boston. Of course, restaurant choices there run the gamut of every cuisine thinkable. Moving to Rockland was a bit of a letdown for the taste buds. In Plymouth, even though it can’t compare to Boston as far as the number of restaurants and the vastness of ethnic cuisine, the foodie will not be disappointed. Truly, it’s hard to go wrong in this town.  Due to the current pandemic, I’ve had to investigate some of my favorite take-out spots in Plymouth.

Since the closure of many dine-in options, restaurants have either gone take-out, or are not currently open. For my list of favorite take-out spots in Plymouth, I am sticking to a quick bite, meaning that some of my favorites such as Dillon’s Local, The Tasty, and Cork and Table are not being mentioned. To me, it’s best to sit down inside a restaurant to enjoy a meal. Not saying I don’t love to belly up to the bar at Speedwell Tavern or Lucioso’s Pub because I definitely do. For now, these places offer easy take-out options: wings, burgers, stuff like that.

I’m also not even mentioning favorite sushi, seafood, or Thai places (cue Kogi, Wood’s Seafood, and Star of Siam, respectively). At the following five spots, it is easy to grab something greasy and satisfying: a bunch of wings, a burger, a pizza, or all three. During this COVID-19 crisis, these have been some of my favorite take-out spots in Plymouth. I don’t know about you, but part of me has thrown caution to the wind lately (at least in terms of eating, not social distancing). Meaning, if I’m going to get take-out, a health-conscious option is not my first choice. These five are all delicious but take heed, I’m not ordering a big salad

Speedwell Tavern

A burger and wings from Speedwell Tavern

Speedwell oozes coolness. It has a dark interior, the waitstaff (typically waitresses) have a bit of an edge to them, but are still friendly. Their craft beer selection is truly out of this world. They partner with nearby Craft Beer Cellar and have kegs of awesome stuff. Among the best I’ve had here are Fox Farm from Connecticut, Burlington Beer Company, and they’ve even had Maine Beer Company’s Dinner. They run an amazing burger and beer night–a craft beer and a (large) signature burger for $10, unreal! Their mug club is ever-popular with strict rules.

Burger

I truly miss watching a game with friends, chowing down on a burger and/or wings here. Even without the Speedwell atmosphere, no matter how you slice it, the food is damn good. Recently, my wife and I ordered fifteen wings, half buffalo and honey, half parmesan. Both were to die for. The buffalo honey were some of the best I’ve ever had. We split a burger too, their version of the Big Mac, which was delicious. Cap that with sweet potato fries, and it’s quite a meal.

They are still offering their beer special in conjunction with Craft Beer Cellar on Thursday nights. Buy a four-pack at CBC and get a token for a reduced price burger at Speedwell. Since I miss hanging out at Speedwell so much, it’s easy to forget how good the food really is. It’s now definitely one of my favorite take-out spots in Plymouth. Speedwell Tavern’s location is on Main Street in downtown Plymouth.

Squinny’s Pizza

Squinny’s is a new take out go-to for me

Squinny’s is a new restaurant which is a combination of two Plymouth legends. Al’s Pizza, graced the Plymouth Water Street rotary for forty years (closing a couple of years ago) and was a longtime favorite. Ernie’s restaurant was an Italian family restaurant and a North Plymouth institution that closed a few years ago after the land was purchased and turned into a CVS (like that was necessary). Squinny’s is owned by the Quintal family of the adjacent produce distributor and market in the same building. For Squinny’s, Quintal took elements of both places, including ovens, the head chef, and manager from both restaurants, and inserted them into Squinny’s.

Can’t go wrong with any pizza from Squinny’s

Squinny’s specializes in bar pizza. (They weren’t mentioned in a previous article since they are take-out only which means no beer served). My personal favorite is the decadent chicken ranch pizza. It’s chicken, red onion, and tomatoes on cheese with a layer of ranch dressing underneath. It’s awesome. Get it extra crispy, classic South Shore bar pizza style. Squinny’s is located in the industrial park at 11 Scobee Circle.

Black Raspberry Pub

Even though I wrote about Black Raspberry Pub, which is located inside Cordage Park as a place to enjoy a pizza and craft beer, it’s also perfect for take-out. It’s another spot that specializes in truly awesome bar pizza. The Greek salad pizza is my favorite from the Black Raz. It is topped with olives, feta, tomatoes, and red onions. Similar to Squinny’s chicken ranch, it is rich. And even though it sounds in a different league than pepperoni or other basic toppings, it is so good.

KKatie’s Burger Bar

Whole lotta burger at Kkaties

Kkatie’s Burger Bar has locations in Plymouth, Marshfield, and Hyannis. The original location is at Main Street Extension in Downtown Plymouth. The interior is like a comfortable dive bar. The former tenant actually was a dive bar. They have a take-out room next door. Kkatie’s makes over-the-top burger creations. Try the Vermonter with caramelized apples, Vermont cheddar and cherrywood smoked bacon. Or how about the Good Morning Burger with a fried egg, cheese, and bacon. My go-to is the California Burger with guacamole, crushed tortilla chips, and pepper jack cheese. It’s excellent. Kkatie’s has other menu options too, but go with a burger, it won’t disappoint. (I like the truffle fries too.)

Lucioso’s Pub

Lucioso’s- look for the sign with the green dude

Lucioso’s Pub is located on Spring Lane and is actually located in the Plimoth Grist Mill. It’s a fun, wood-paneled townie establishment. It’s perfectly suitable for families, barflies, and tourists alike. The food is classic American: pizza, sandwiches, burgers. I always enjoy eating here with my family or enjoying a beer at the bar with friends. It’s also always been one of my favorite take out spots in Plymouth. My go-to here is a turkey club sandwich with regular fries. Call that boring, but they just make it a really tasty sandwich. It’s the meal I had the night my first son was born. The fries are excellent. I often opt for a plate of wings to boot. The Old Bay seasoning dry rub and the parmesan flavors are my personal favorites.

Another top wing spot

Plymouth’s restaurant scene is truly historic. This post could encapsulate at least ten more places of all different cuisines. These five are some of my favorite take-out spots in Plymouth.
