Scarlet Oak Tavern: My Favorite Meal

For this entry in the “My Favorite Meal” series, we are heading back to Hingham, Massachusetts’s Scarlet Oak Tavern. Upon moving to the South Shore about ten years ago, this was the first restaurant that really took my breath away. The whole experience here is just perfect. On a winter’s night, the roaring fire, colonial tavern decor, and delicious food make this a dining destination not soon forgotten.

On this post, it’s all about the food. Although I have had many exceptional meals here, for this series I am detailing my favorite meal, top to bottom.

The entree of my favorite meal!

For the drink selection, typically I opt for a local craft brew. Often on tap are beers from local breweries such as Untold and Widowmaker. To begin the food journey through Scarlet Oak Tavern, for an appetizer I recommend the calamari. The main course that I will choose comes with a salad, so one would not be necessary at this step in the meal.

The Calamari Appetizer

The calamari is cornmeal crusted which is different from the usual heavy batter for deep-frying. This is the Rhode Island style, which includes hot pepper rings to accompany the squid flavor. I like this variety of calamari quite a bit. The crunchy calamari is served with arugula and a creamy remoulade sauce for dipping. Splitting this app will save plenty of room for the main course.

Hanger Steak Frites

The hanger steak, frites and arugula salad- the perfect entree.

My main course of choice at Scarlet Oak Tavern has to be the hanger steak frites. I personally order my steak medium-rare, with just enough tenderness that the flavor just melts in your mouth. The hanger steak is served in small slices. It is red meat perfection, simply succulent. The frites are shoestring, with rosemary and truffle drizzle. The tastiness of the frites is outstanding. The light arugula salad with red onion has a light sprinkling of dressing. Bone marrow butter adds a layer of decadence to the meal if you wish.

A favorite dining destination of mine.

Truly this is an outstanding meal. Each bite is worth savoring. Quite honestly, with the beer, the app, and the entree, I do not have room for dessert. Scarlet Oak Tavern is one of the best restaurants on the South Shore and this is my choice for my favorite meal.
