Woods Hole

To most Vineyard bound tourists, Woods Hole is simply the journey and not the destination. Woods Hole is the location of the most popular ferry terminal (Steamship Authority) to the island. Cars queue up in line waiting for the ferry’s door to open, while others frantically chew their nails in hopes of catching that elusive boat with only seconds to spare while crammed into the shuttle bus from the faraway lots. Hardly a soul stops to think about what is in the town itself.

Woods Hole- marine sciences extrodinaire

Woods Hole, a village of Falmouth, is best known for the mark it makes on oceanographic research. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute is the largest facility dedicated to the study of marine science in the nation! (And many think that the village’s biggest claim to fame is as the ferry terminal) Additionally, The University of Chicago operates extensive research facilities within the town itself. Boston University’s SEA-semester abroad is based out of here as well.

For me, who is much more of an English/history person than a math/science, Woods Hole is still appealing, with its share of recreational activities, restaurants and sightseeing destinations even though I can’t tell the difference between a mantaray and a ray of light. This trip is designed for the whole family and can be done in an afternoon or as a weekend getaway. (Simply type in Woods Hole or Falmouth in the Booking.com link on this page for hotel choices).

Shining Sea Bikeway

From sea to paved rail trail

The Shining Sea Bikeway’s terminus (or beginning depending on how you look at it) is Woods Hole, ending at the ferry terminal. This former railroad bed spans the length of Falmouth from North Falmouth to Woods Hole, a total of 10.7 miles, beginning and ending where train stations once stood. It passes next to the Sippewissett Marsh and close to the ocean. Veering down roads that cross the path, many lead to water access. It is a flat, easy ride (even for kids) with access points to downtown and Woods Hole. (Read more about my own Shining Sea adventure here.)

Woods Hole Science Aquarium

This small aquarium is perfect for small children. Watch seals at play outside the building while the interior features fish and a touch tank. It is only open on weekdays and there is no admission charge.

Close to the center of the village is the postcard mainstay, Nobska Light. It is located a short drive or about a half hour walk from Woods Hole on Nobska Road. This is a classic looking lighthouse. It is stout, but tall, a white tower capped with a black top and has an adjacent shingled house. The gorgeous views of the sea stretch out to Martha’s Vineyard.

Restaurant Choices:

Shuckers

Woods Hole
Shuckers and such

An institution for the freshest seafood for 39 years, Shuckers is a crowd pleaser. Enjoy lobsters, clams and of course, the namesake oysters on the deck overlooking Eel Pond. This restaurant is perfect for families and is open seasonally.

Water Street Kitchen:

An upscale eatery with a nautical twist, Water Street Kitchen is known for their delicious seaworthy and landlubber options. It is only open for dinner and reservations are recommended, especially during the warmer months. To savor the delicious Water Street fare, and to linger a while over a glass of wine, with the backdrop of a setting sun, you may want to leave the kids at home for this one.

Pie in the Sky

Perfect for grabbing a quick bite, a beer, a coffee or a pastry before sailing to the Vineyard or an easy spot to bide awhile in the midst of a bike ride, Pie in the Sky is a mainstay. Sit outside with Fido for a casual lunch. Bring the family for breakfast or dinner, Pie in the Sky serves it all.

Frantic ferry rushers often overlook Woods Hole. Next time, make sure to allot yourself time to enjoy this village or better yet, make it a destination of it in itself. There is plenty to eat, see and do (not to mention, learn) in Woods Hole.
