Backyard Road Trips

80s Movies and Another Six-Pack

My original ‘90s movies and a six pack choices were argued and discussed by legions of Backyard Road Trips readers everywhere, thus presenting the need to write a ‘90s movies and ANOTHER six pack article, with readers’ choices. It was a similar fate with my ‘80s movies and a six pack article. Due to the outpouring of shock and disbelief, here I present to you ‘80s movies and another six-pack, the reader’s choice edition. (I’m not sure why my collection of breakdancing movies doesn’t count as ‘80s classics?!)

When Harry Met Sally and Other Half’s Green Flowers

When Harry Met Green Flowers

To be completely honest, many of these movies are deemed “classics” of the 1980s, but When Harry Met Sally is the only one that I had previously seen. And to be more completely honest, it’s probably a Top 10 movie for me. The connection with the beer? Easy, although the film begins in the Windy City, it’s primarily about New York City, where Other Half is from.

Baby Boom and Lord Hobo’s Boom Sauce

Kind of a layup here, and a movie with “Boom” in the title can easily be paired with Massachusetts’ Lord Hobo’s Boom Sauce. The movie was cute and the once buzzed about beer still tasted good.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun and The Girls’ Brewery IPA

Girls!

Damn, the connections between this 80s movie and another six-pack aren’t much of a stretch, are they? “Girls” and “Girls.” This brewery is a newer one out of southeastern Massachusetts. With no taproom to visit, find their beer in local stores. It’s more fun to be sipping a Girls while watching Girls Just Want to Have Fun

Sixteen Candles and Vitamin Sea’s 6

This may be the biggest stretch. Another movie that I should have seen previously, alas I finally did. Like many of them, this was entertaining. This is a bit of a stretch for this 80s Movies and another six pack entry. My thought here was this beer is 16 ounces, and the movie is Sixteen Candles. This “6” Double IPA from Weymouth’s Vitamin Sea is in tribute to Celtics legend, Bill Russell. (They’ve also had “33” and “34” for Larry Bird and Paul Pierce respectively.)

Project X and Mast Landing’s Xtra Rugged IPA

X marks the spot

Now this was a movie that I had no clue about. And I was doubly confused since there is a newer movie with the same title which has no relation to this one. I also had to buy this one since no library owned the DVD in their system. It was worth it though, as it was my second favorite of the six pack. Air Force pilot Matthew Broderick has a new mission with monkeys. There’s lots of monkeying around, and this is the second film to also star Helen Hunt. It’s a cute film, heartwarming and a lot of fun. Go, Virgil! Clearly, I was looking for an “X” beer here and Maine’s Mast Landing fit the bill.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Sierra Nevada’s Oktoberfest

Location, location, location. Sierra Nevada and the film both take place in California. Would Spicoli be proud? I sure hope so. This quintessential 80s film that I had not seen was a lot of fun!

Well there we have it, ‘80s movies and another six-pack. Through this article I was not only able to sample six fine beers but was schooled in high culture of the 1980s.
