Backyard Road Trips

90s Movies and a Six Pack

Time to pump up those Reeboks and put on your flannel because we’re time-warping back to the 90s! Instead of pairing music and beer, it’s the latest take on movies and beer. These 90s movies and a six-pack may not include many blockbusters, Oscar winners, or even cult classics, but they do fit the criteria: made in the 90s! From kids’ movies to mediocre masterpieces, get your popcorn ready because the film is about to start! (Oh, and look out for a ton of sequels.)

Cool Runnings and Red Stripe

Cool Runnings and Red Stripe

What is that mon? Bobsledding and Jamaica! One of the most iconic kids’ movies of the decade is Cool Runnings, the unlikely story of four men from Jamaica vaulting their way to the Winter Olympics. It also stars John Candy which is always a win. The only beer to accompany this HAS to be Jamaica’s Red Stripe lager.

Critters 3  and Lawson’s Super Session #3

Critters 3 and Lawson’s Super Session 3

The Critters franchise was/is kinda like a more grotesque version of Gremlins. Except when gremlins were fuzzy they were cute. These guys are fuzzy and scary at the same time. Whatta concept! This second sequel to the original is best known as the debut of Leonardo DiCaprio. So for all those Leo purists, Critters 3 is where to start. Given the “3” it’s paired with this excellent session IPA.

Pet Semetary 2  and Bissell Brothers’ Swish

The Maine event

Unfortunately one of the greatest movies of all time, Pet Sematary was released in 1989, but never fear, a sequel was made only a few short years later! No Fred Gwynn, ayuh (Maine accent) but we are back in Maine for this Stephen King spinoff. What better to greet those back-from-the-dead animals than by toasting one of Vacationland’s finest brews, Swish!

My Giant and Stony Creek’s Big Cranky

An extra cranky giant

I like Billy Crystal; he’s probably up there among my favorite actors. I mean who cannot love City Slickers or When Harry Met Sally!? This late 90s flick is forgettable except that it pairs Crystal with the tallest NBA player ever, Gheorghe Muresan! For that tall order, we need a tall beer or at least a beer with a high ABV. Cue Big Cranky from Stony Creek. This Double IPA is pretty intense, but you may need it to get you through this one. Fun fact: it is based on Billy Crystal’s friendship with Andre the Giant; they worked together on the 80s classic The Princess Bride

The Nightmare Before Christmas and Voodoo Ranger’s Liquid Paradise

Scary skeletons!

Jack from the movie is a skeleton and so is the Ranger of New Belgium’s Voodoo Ranger line. The Ranger with a bomber jacket and ear-flapped cap is a bit more of a showboat than old Jack. But hey, bones are bones.

Naked Gun 33 ⅓ and Magnify Brewing’s Big Pulp

The Juice is loose!

Now, this HAS to be on the list of 90s movies and a six-pack! This is one sequel that is deserving of its predecessors, creating an absolute canon of work. Even though I’ve seen this movie dozens of times, it never fails to crack me up! I love the Big Pulp can, orange as a tribute to Big Gulp of 7-11. Why this juicy beer? Because the Juice is in it, as OJ Simpson’s last feature film.

I hope you enjoyed digging into the best (hmmm…that’s pushing it) 90s movies and enjoying a beer or six along the way! Now that this movie marathon of 90s movies and a six-pack is over, why don’t you familiarize yourself with the best breakdancing movies?
