Hands down, the best grinders, I mean subs, in Plymouth are at Stracco’s Subs. Stracco’s is a tiny take-out restaurant just south of the Training Green in downtown Plymouth. Stracco’s makes a variety of sandwiches from traditional to specialty. Quite honestly, everything I have ordered from Stracco’s has been fantastic. The owners of the restaurant are the Stracco family and they specializes in Italian dishes.
Favorite Subs
My typical go-to sub is the Pilgrim. It’s a Thanksgiving dinner rolled up in a sub, with turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and mayo all complementing each other in every bite and served on a perfect roll. The turkey is roasted on-site and hand-sliced; this definitely is not Oscar Mayer! Another favorite of mine is the Baby Bleu. This is breaded chicken cordon bleu, with delicious ham and Swiss cheese. Someone recently recommended I try this sandwich and let me tell you, it will not be the last time I order it!
You can’t go wrong with any sandwich though. Even a regular turkey sandwich here is delicious. Their antipasto and Greek salads are great accompaniments to their subs. Their specialty is Italian food items, featuring their popular meatballs, ravioli, and ziti.
Dessert at Stracco’s
Make sure to pick up a dessert while you’re there. I love their cannoli. Recently I tried three cannoli from the North End of Boston’s big three bakeries and truthfully, Stracco’s was better than any of them! I like mine with powdered sugar and chocolate chips.
The friendly atmosphere and the aroma of their sauce make it difficult to leave this tiny place. Their family recipes are handed down from great-grandma, with everything freshly made. Their website notes that if a family member didn’t make grandma’s famous sauce correctly, she would come after them with the wooden spoon!
Stracco’s does quite the business for the lunchtime crowd and closes at 5, so make sure to order early. They also take Sundays off. For me, it’s the perfect spot to grab a sub for lunch, whether for myself or when family comes over to visit. There is literally something for everyone and no one leaves hungry! They are also available for catering.
