As a frequent traveler to Vermont’s Upper Valley over the last 20 years, the community that I have witnessed the most change in is White River Junction. It’s transformed from a bygone railroad town to a thriving village with an independent and artistic spirit. Establishments such as River Roost Brewery and Thyme restaurant originally made WRJ a destination for me. Each time I visit, there is a new art gallery, eatery, or boutique. During my last trip, I discovered Putnam’s vine/yard, which houses a coffee shop, wine bar, cocktail lounge, and gift shop. It even sells plants!
Whatever Putnam’s vine/yard is, it’s simply cool. When I’m traveling in the Green Mountain State, an iced maple latte is a must for me. I was staying in White River Junction and perused my coffee options when I stumbled upon Putnam’s. It’s located in a hidden spot, in a former trainyard that now houses River Roost, Big Fatty’s BBQ, and Elixer, along with other businesses. It’s tucked on the south side, meaning it’s easy to miss.
A Historical Perspective
I’m a sucker for the reuse of industrial spaces, whether a factory or, in this case, a 1930s freight house. The brick structure is well preserved. Walking from the parking lot, a small patio area welcomes guests to sit and sip. Upon entering, there’s a gift shop with wine, clothing, and other merchandise.
Before its use as a freight house, this location was a roundhouse for the Vermont Central Railroad and, even earlier, the site of an ironworks. The moniker “Putnam” is in homage to the family surname of the founder, Kelsey Rush, whose descendants harken back eleven generations, arriving in the Massachusetts Bay Colony from England.
A Toast to You
Order your coffee, a glass of wine, or a cocktail from the bar at the front of the main room. Here, an array of seating options is available. There are books to read, games to play, and the atmosphere invites the patron to stay all day. It’s easy to do too, since coffee time can slip into wine or cocktail time easily. Putnam’s vine/yard truly has a unique atmosphere that is all its own.
It has a well-curated wine list, delicious drinks, and an impressive beer menu (it must, since we are in Vermont). And for what I desired, a perfectly crafted maple latte. I enjoyed it so much that I came for a second visit the following day.
