A tequila drink just hits right. And here are ten tequila cocktails from seven different establishments that are spot on. They bring their own take on margaritas and more, and are in very different settings. From a family Mexican restaurant to a concert venue, a hotel lobby, and a few others that are more conducive for a date, they do run the gamut. Without further ado, here are some of my top tequila cocktails in Southeastern Massachusetts and beyond.
Shojo – Chinatown, Boston, MA

When I’m at the utterly delish Shojo in Boston’s Chinatown, I have to go for the FKA Muay Thai. And when asked if I want it spicy, the answer is a resounding, “yes!” The food is awesome. Share a few plates, the calamari, dumplings, and fried rice are some of my faves, but the cocktails are just as good. The Muay Thai is made with lemongrass, tamarind soda, and lime, with all the flavors pronounced, citrusy, and spot on.
La Bamba Tacos and Tequila – Plymouth, MA

Walkable from my house is La Bamba in Plymouth. They offer a wide variety of margaritas, but I always choose the margarita flight. It’s all about variety for me! The strawberry, mango, and jalapeno are all very tasty. The mango, though, is my jam. It’s got a salt and pepper flaked rim that creates a sweet/salty masterpiece with every sip. In the nice weather, enjoy dining al fresco!
Levitate Backyard and Rexicana Surf Cantina – Marshfield, MA

Whenever I go to a concert (or a work party) at the Levitate Backyard in Marshfield, I need to have a margarita (or two). Make sure you order it at the bar and not the canned version. It’s a pre-made margarita, but it’s just damn good. Cold, refreshing, and full of citrus taste–it’s perfect for a summer nighttime concert. Whether you’re there to see Ripe, G. Love, or Deer Tick, the margarita is the perfect accompaniment.
Black Raspberry Pub– Plymouth, MA

The Black Raz has always been a favorite of mine for great food in an atmosphere like no other (think a former mill). During the holiday season, the Black Raspberry Pub has turned into a winter wonderland. They feature specialty cocktails such as the spicy Grinch margarita, which has a shocking green hue.
Rye Tavern – Plymouth, MA

One of my favorite warm-weather dining destinations is Rye Tavern in Plymouth. Off a dirt road near the Pinehills, this centuries-old tavern is open all year, but there is something special about dining (and drinking) in their outdoor patio among the flowers. In the summer, I like the spicy watermelon margarita. Refreshing with a kick, this is the perfect summer sipper on the patio.
Anejo– Hyannis, Falmouth, and Plymouth, MA

With locations on the Cape and across the bridge in Plymouth, Anejo is a great spot for high-end Mexican food. Along with delicious entrees come excellent drinks. Anejo in Plymouth is a multi-level establishment, housed in a former firehouse. With a long bar, there are plenty of cocktail options to be had. Go for a tried and true margarita made just as it should be.
Shipwrecked– Falmouth

I guess being shipwrecked isn’t so bad if this is it! Shipwrecked in Falmouth is a popular bar/restaurant for locals and tourists alike. Serving stellar bar food in a jovial atmosphere, Shipwrecked is also known for its drink menu. I like to opt for a spicy margarita to beat those blustery Cape Cod days and nights in the offseason.
Embassy Suites – Boston (with locations around the world)

This one is a head-scratcher, but hear me out. Remember, I said we’d have top tequila drinks for different occasions? You’ve just had a fantastic but at times trying day in the city with your young kids. Your hotel, Embassy Suites, offers a free cocktail during its daily happy hour. You stand in line and get yourself a margarita, gratis. You sit in a comfy chair while your kids, who have been out all day and should be tired but are not, run around. You take a sip, it may not be the best margarita you’ve ever had, but it sure tastes good right now. And you can’t beat the price!
Two Stop Connecticut Bonus Round
I know this article is about top tequila cocktails in Southeastern Massachusetts, but as I often visit my home state of Connecticut, I figure I’d throw in a couple of favorites.
Geronimo – New Haven and Fairfield, CT

This Tex-Mex spot in downtown New Haven serves amazing tacos, guacamole and of course, margaritas. The well-crafted cocktail is the perfect way to start the meal. With food and drink this good, you’ll be yelling “Geronimo” in no time!
Mikro Depot – Hamden, CT

For a real kick, the spicy margarita at uber-cool Mikro Depot in Hamden does the trick. Just off the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, this former train station serves excellent upscale pub food with a superb beer and drink selection, including an extra caliente margarita!
With stops in Plymouth, Boston, the Cape, Marshfield, and beyond, here’s a selection of my top tequila cocktails in Southeastern Massachusetts and beyond. From a hotel lobby to a hip Chinatown eatery, all of these are worth seeking out, for food and beverage, and especially for their top tequila cocktails.
