Looking for your next South Shore kid-approved microadventure? Then you MUST visit the South Shore YMCA Natural Science Center in Norwell. This nature center features a small hands-on museum, along with ample outdoor space and trails for exploring. Bonus–it abuts town conservation land!
The museum opened in 2011 with help from local biologist and celebrity Jeff Corwin. It operates day camps through the summer and offers special events all year long. Among the most popular seasonal activities are Cranberry Day, Corn Fest, and Maple Day. Family movie nights are also a hit.
The EcoZone

The South Shore YMCA Natural Science Center operates a small nature center museum called the EcoZone that includes activities that will appeal to children of any age. During my visit, my 9-year-old enjoyed it as much as my two-year-old, but for different reasons. Watch indigenous turtles swim in tanks, get up close to a native wilderness scene, and observe the skulls of various animals. There are even dinosaur footprints that were found in Massachusetts!

Even when the EcoZone is closed, the grounds, which are ripe for exploration, are open. Always changing, the newest garden, which is stunning, was opened in June of 2025. The Wildlings Garden may look like just a piece of the woods, but that’s because it is, featuring all plants native to Massachusetts. Meet two of the South Shore YMCA Natural Science Center’s resident raptors, Rusty the hawk and Elliott the owl, as you wander the grounds.
Let’s Take a Hike!

The grounds of the Natural Science Center include a system of four closed-loop trails, but whose paths are all perfect for little legs. If you’d like to continue regional exploration, check out Jacob’s Pond right across the street from the natural science center. The main path from the parking lot to the pond is wide and accessible. The dock at the end is a perfect location to cast a line or to paddle out on a kayak from. Speaking of accessibility, the dock is accessible to all as well. Jacob’s Pond includes an extensive trail system with paths that meander every which way. For a full list of trails, check out this map of Jacob’s Pond and adjacent Valley Swamp.

The EcoZone nature center is open from Monday through Friday, 9 AM to noon, with the admission price of $5 per person (two and under free). The EcoZone is free for members of the YMCA to visit, and the grounds are free for all. For more information about the South Shore YMCA Natural Science Center, check out their website, which includes information about summer camp and the on-site preschool.
