Things to do in Orono, Maine

Orono, Maine, is best known as the home of the University of Maine’s flagship campus. It is close to Bangor, about an hour south of Millinocket, the entrance to the Mount Katahdin region, and an hour and a half north of Acadia National Park. Its geography makes it a superb location to stay if you want a jumping-off point for many of Maine’s farther attractions. Even if you’re not traveling out of town, Orono is a great place to spend a night. If you’re looking for things to do in Orono, look no further.

Orono Brewing Company should be on your list of things to do in Orono.

Hotel Ursa

This Ursa marks Hotel Ursa and the UMaine campus

Hotel Ursa (Ursa, the Latin word for bear) is located on the campus of the University of Maine. A gorgeous boutique hotel, it consists of three buildings: one newly built and two former academic buildings. The architecture of all the buildings is impressive, with lodgings ranging from traditional hotel rooms to others with tall ceilings that fit seamlessly into the historic nature. It’s such a cool place to stay. Not only are you on the campus itself which is perfect for a sporting event or if visiting family, but you’re only a short drive from the town itself, and the accommodations are superb.

University of Maine

At Hotel Ursa you are directly on the campus of the University of Maine. During my stay, it was quiet even though it was the weekend. Fun fact–the university is situated on an island, Marsh Island to be exact, as the Penobscot and Stillwater rivers encircle the land.

Walking around the UMaine campus

The campus is stately with a mix of old and new buildings. Strolling around here is like stepping onto the set of a movie that takes place on an idyllic New England college campus.

Nest

After waking, my first destination when I travel is coffee. To start my day, I headed to Nest. For this adventure, I left the car at the hotel and walked 35 minutes into town. At Nest, I enjoyed an iced latte. The place was packed with mostly college students but also families and folks of every age. I was off to explore the town with a well-made latte in hand.

The Store Ampersand

Check out the Store Ampersand

Just down the street is the Store Ampersand. How cool is this place? Anything you need under one roof. Maine gifts, toys, craft beer, Christmas decor, cookies, coffee, and groceries, with places to sit and relax. As my visit was the week before Thanksgiving, many customers were even ordering holiday pies. Trust me, you won’t leave empty-handed. I picked up a couple of small toys for the kids, a Maine coaster, a soap, and a single beer.

Farmers Market

I think it’s just about lunchtime now. Head diagonally across Main Street, through the walkway of the town hall, and into the side parking lot of the Adams Elementary School, where the Orono Farmers Market is held every Saturday. Since my stay was short, I wasn’t in the market for fresh fruit and veggies. What I did choose was an empanada and a sweet crepe—a satisfying duo. If you’re looking for things to do in Orono on a Saturday, check out the farmers market.

Back to Campus

My hands were getting pretty full, so I decided to curb my shopping spree and head back to the hotel. After unloading in the hotel room, I headed out to explore the campus further. Originally, I wanted to check out the Orono Bog Boardwalk but it wasn’t going to fit into my afternoon, unfortunately. What I did though, was investigate the extensive trail system on campus. With both paved and unpaved trails, it was easy to escape into the woods only steps away from the campus.

Orono Brewing Company

Noshing on popcorn at Orono Brewing Company

Dinner and beer was had at the funky Orono Brewing Company. Hopping into the car for this leg of the journey, the brewery is located just south of town on Alewife Run. It’s a large industrial space with some fun features such as a fireplace, hockey jerseys hanging from the rafters, large TVs, and a sitting area that is caged in. Try a selection of their beers. For food, it’s pub grub style like chicken sandwiches or nosh on some popcorn. I enjoyed trying their beer, including Let’s Go Black Bears, the official beer of the UMaine teams, and Tubular, their flagship IPA.

Marsh Island Brewing

Marsh Island Brewing

Back in town is Marsh Island Brewing. This small venue with indoor and outdoor seating has a varied selection of beers. With a flight, I tried everything from a sour to an IPA to a stout and enjoyed every one. Grab a few to go on your way out.

Black Bears Hockey

So conflicted… I went to BU but at a Black Bears game!

The culminating event for my day in Orono was taking in a UMaine Black Bears hockey game. They play at Alfond Arena, located at the back of the campus. It was built in 1977 and is a throwback. We’re talking seats with an obstructed view, the “bar” area placed behind a concrete wall so the game cannot be seen, and the team store, which is located practically in the entryway of the arena. But what an atmosphere! It’s an awesome place to catch a game! It’s loud and Hockey East (the league which Maine plays) is excellent play. If you like hockey, Alfond Arena is a must-visit.

I love exploring new places but have visited most places in New England. Orono was totally new to me and spending a night in Orono made for a great adventure! If you’re looking for things to do in Orono, catch a sporting event, grab a coffee, enjoy a craft brew, and peruse the downtown shops.
