Nothing beats a perfect cup of coffee. Or if you’re like me, a perfect iced latte. Although we may not live in Seattle, the South Shore of Massachusetts is quickly becoming a coffee destination. We’ll be visiting a few on the South Shore along with two quick trips over the bridge to the Cape Cod towns of Sandwich and Mashpee. Let’s take a look at the best coffee shops on the South Shore…And beyond!
Leyden Street Coffee
Starting in the South Shore town of Plymouth is Leyden Street Coffee. I originally fell in love with Leyden Street when they set up shop in the Dirty Water Distillery close to my home. Not long after, the distillery moved to North Plymouth and Leyden Street to Manomet. Even though Leyden Street Coffee is no longer walkable for me, it’s worth the ten-minute drive. Whether it’s a regular iced latte or a seasonal special, expect an expertly blended coffee drink.
Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters
The Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters is not far over the Sagamore Bridge in the town of Sandwich. The former automotive garage makes a perfect latte. Try with a flavor or not, either way, this coffee shop seems more at home in the Pacific Northwest than the touristy Cape Cod. Try a pour-over, a cold brew, or an aero press. Take home a bag of beans. If you’re deeper into the Cape, they have locations in Brewster and Chatham too.
Cape Cod Coffee
While most of the coffee roasters and coffee shops in the South Shore and beyond are relatively new, Cape Cod Coffee has been around since 1970. With coffee shops in Mashpee and one in Wareham, there are three separate locations for your enjoyment. Not only does Cape Cod Coffee brew an excellent cup of coffee but they offer full-service restaurants. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner depending on the location. And I’m partial to the steak and eggs for breakfast.
SlackTide Coffee Roasters
SlackTide has two locations, the flagship in Marshfield and an outpost inside Prevites Marketplace in Hanover. In Marshfield, it is located inside Levitate, the surf shop and clothing brand that has put the town on the map. SlackTide’s lattes tend to have a roasty flavor to them, with a richness that has made the brand an area favorite.
Seabird Coffee
Located in the Depot Street marketplace in Duxbury, Seabird Coffee and Co. has a second shop in Cohasset. Although Seabird is not a coffee roaster, it features guest beans from near (Speedwell and Leyden Street) to far (states including Colorado and Montana. No matter whose beans they are brewing, expect an excellent cup of coffee.
Speedwell Coffee and other coffee shops
Plymouth’s Speedwell Coffee is a coffee roaster. Although they do not have a coffee shop of their own, they are featured in many of the area’s coffee houses and bakeries. Including (at least at one point) Hearth Artisan Bread, Keegan Kreations, and Gunther Tooties. Another of the best coffee shops on the South Shore is the Jolly Bean Cafe in Plymouth. Try one of their seasonal creations. One that I was hooked on during February was their cherry, white mocha, caramel latte. Yes, it sounds like a lot but it’s oh so tasty.
