Now that the holidays are over, the bleak mid-winter sets in. Or does it? Check out the following Boston area winter festivals that keep the spirit alive all season long!
Quebec City
No, Quebec City can’t even be considered Greater Greater Boston, but my trips to Quebec’s Winter Carnival made me first realize that the festive season shouldn’t stop when the ball drops on New Year’s Eve. Meandering through the streets and alleys of Vieux Quebec, all festooned with lights and winter decorations in February made this stark season come alive. This Winter Carnival lasts two weeks and is world-renowned and includes ice castles, parades, and even a mascot. None of these Boston area winter festivals come close to this, but they still can put some magic back into this cold season.
Concord – January 27th
Just west of Boston, literary and revolutionary hotbed, Concord’s Winter Festival takes place this year on January 27th. It will take place at the Hunt Building and Emerson Field at 90 Stow Street. The event includes horse-drawn sleigh rides, food, a bonfire, and live music. It will perk up any mid-winter blues!
Weir River Farm – Hingham – January 4th
The Weir River Farm in Hingham held its New Year’s bonfire on January 4th. Although it’s past for this year, keep it in mind for next. It featured a blazing fire where guests could bring their own Christmas tree to add to the fire. Vitamin Sea offered beers, and Mom on the Go brought the food, along with hot drinks which were available.
Yarmouth – February 17-19
For this weekend in February, Yarmouth’s amusement center, Skull Island, will be offering outdoor ice skating as part of the Yarmouth Winter Carnival. Enjoy s’more’s, food trucks, and other activities suitable for the whole family.
Lowell – February 16-17
For the closest to Quebec City’s revelry, the award goes to Lowell (along with Newport). The Spindle City comes alive for this weekend in mid-February with Lowell’s Winter Fest featuring live music, food trucks, ice sculptures, demonstrations, a winter indoor market, a soup festival and a chocolate fest. Look for fire sculptures illuminating the night.
Newton – January 27-28
Boston’s neighbor to the west, Newton, has one of the most extensive winter festivals around. There are several events over two days, including live music, a soup cook-off, ice sculptures, glow-in-the-dark hula hoops, art installations, a nature walk, and a winter market. Make sure to check out the Newton WinterFEST for one the best Boston area winter festivals.
Salem – February 9-10
It’s not all haunted happenings here in Salem. For a sweeter twist on the winter festival, check out the Witch City’s So Sweet Festival. Indulge in chocolate and wine tasting as you peruse the city’s boutiques. Take an evening stroll to view a collection of ice sculptures scattered about, and pop in to local businesses with a chance to win prizes.
Newport – February 16-25
The farthest location for the Boston area winter festivals is Newport, Rhode Island. Each day during this stretch features an array of fun events for all members of the family. From live music and shows to kiddie events and mansion tours, there’s literally something here for everyone. Helicopter tours, a chili cook off, and a beer tasting are just some of the fun going on during this ten day celebration. The Newport Winter Festival is celebrating its 36th year in 2024.
The next time you think all the festivities end once the New Year rolls around, look no further than this collection of Boston area winter festivals. From smaller neighborhood events such as those in Concord or Yarmouth to larger scale events over multiple days in Lowell and Newport, there’s plenty of excitement and activity to be had this winter!
