Holmberg Orchards in Ledyard, Connecticut is THE place in the southeastern part of the state for all things apple. Often thought of as a pick-your-own destination, the retail shop and bakery are open all year round. So even when the apple trees aren’t ripe for the picking, Holmberg Orchards is a spectacular stop any time of the year.
Fall Traditions at Holmberg Orchards
For many families, picking apples here is an annual tradition. Scale the steep driveway to the sky-high orchard and immerse your afternoon in fall fun. There’s a hay ride to get you to the rows of ripe trees, as well as (stationary) tractors for the kids to climb on. There’s also a bake shop and a pumpkin patch among other festive attractions. Our family has made apple picking at Holmberg Orchards part of our seasonal repertoire for the last few years.
Year Round Fun
Holmberg Orchards began four generations ago in 1896. Progressing through the years the operation has expanded. Starting in the 1980s the pick-your-own and bakery aspects were added. During the early 1990s, the bakery and greenhouse began. In 2007, the latest Holmberg generation added a line of fruit wines and hard ciders to their repertoire. Their pick-your-own season includes fruit such as blueberries, apples, raspberries, and even lavender and pumpkins. Check their website for what’s in season.
Even when it’s not picking season, visiting their store is always in the cards. Come here for freshly baked pies, featuring apple, strawberry rhubarb, and many others. Also, apple crisp, muffins, and specialty foods are here for purchase. You’ll find chocolates and soap, fresh produce, and their own sweet cider, hard cider, and wine.
