One of the many areas of adulthood that parenting three young kids limits is the ability to go out to eat at places where the menu is more than just chicken tenders or pizza. With all of the excellent restaurants on the South Shore, I feel that my restaurant checklist is growing longer by the week without crossing many off. On a rare free afternoon with my wife, we finally made it to the much-desired Oysterman in Duxbury.
Out to Lunch
The Oysterman is a small restaurant which is a perfect spot for a date night (or afternoon) in this case. With a long bar, it welcomes you to stop by for a drink and a half dozen oysters, or if you are like me, a whole lotta other food options as well.
Just the fact of going out to eat without the kids in tow feels pretty liberating, so during rare occasions such as this, my wife and I tend to over-order. We both started with drinks (11:45 rounds up to noon, right?). She had an excellent gimlet, and I chose a local beer, an IPA from the new brewery, 42nd Parallel Brewing from neighboring Kingston.
Let’s Eat
Being the Oysterman, and the fact that we were in Duxbury (home of Island Creek Oysters), I just had to start with six oysters. They were served impeccably over a bed of ice. The mignonette was maple based and it was also served with the traditional fixings including lemon and cocktail sauce. (a mignonette is a vinegar-based sauce typically served with oysters)
Lunch is Served at the Oysterman
Surprisingly, I chose the chicken sandwich. Typically I’d go fish at a place such as this, but this sandwich came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. Jackie ordered three appetizers which she thought were small. They were not but they sure were tasty.
My favorite was the tuna tartare. Instead of the typically sliced tuna, this comes in a sculpted pile served with chips to scoop it with. The tuna was so fresh and just so scrumptious. My wife also had a cup of the chowder which was a satisfying rendition of the New England-style classic. Lastly, she picked the Oysterman egg rolls. With the perfect combination of steak, cheese, and some veggies, these are excellent.
The Oysterman is located at 30 Railroad Avenue in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Go for the oysters and the drinks and stay for the delicious creative menu crafted with care.
