For me, memories of March in New England feature the first few warm(er) sunny spring days, cracking the car windows when the temp reaches sixty or walking in the sunshine. More often than not in reality, March days are wet, with driving wind, with temperatures close to freezing. For this outing, our March family road trip to Boston takes us to the Children’s Museum, Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Anna’s Taqueria.
Boston Children’s Museum
Our first destination for our March family road trip to Boston is the Children’s Museum. Our tribe has been to many a children’s museum, but surprisingly this was our first venture to the Boston museum, which is always heralded as one of the very best. Located in the chic Fort Point/Seaport neighborhood, this former warehouse has been packing in the kids since before I was born. If you’re driving into the city, parking at 321 Congress Street is easy. Download the LAZ Parking app, it’s the only way to pay. The price is around $20 but you can stay all day. It’s right across from the museum.
Currently, tickets are best reserved in advance online and are available at half-day intervals. This museum has exhibits that are truly astounding. On the first floor, there is a stories-tall play structure that keeps ‘em busy for a long time. Also on this floor are interactive exhibits where kids can pull on ropes and use pedal power.
The museum has three floors of fun, including an Arthur-themed play area, a Construction Zone, and the Science Playground. The latter includes a raceway where balls are shot to and fro through a variety of structures. This museum has a day’s worth of fun but since the tickets are timed, we only have the morning so we’re off to the next destination.
Faneuil Hall Marketplace
We’re not heading far off the beaten path for our March family road trip to Boston since our next stop is Quincy Market. Hop on the Red Line of the T at South Station close to the Children’s Museum, change at Park Street to the Green Line, and get off at the Government Center stop. The Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market complex is one of the city’s top tourist destinations and with good reason: an outdoor shopping center, with indoor stores, restaurants, and kiosks. In warmer weather, look for outdoor performers.
Sit-down restaurants and bars include the Sam Adams Taproom, Walrus and Carpenter Oysters, the Salty Dog, and Ned Devine’s Irish Pub. Inside Quincy Market, there is a whole collection of vendors selling every cuisine possible. We’re stopping here for a quick bite but not for a full meal. From chowder to cookies, Indian food to sushi, something here will satisfy. Make sure to visit the kiosk shops flanking the interior food hall. There are plenty of other shops to stop at too including inside Faneuil Hall, and other staples such as Urban Outfitters, Best of Boston gift shop, and Newbury Comics.
Anna’s Taqueria
For our meal, we’re heading to my favorite Boston-area chain, Anna’s Taqueria! Only a few blocks away on Cambridge Street is the Beacon Hill outpost of this Mexican mainstay. Even though it’s a walk, it’s my pick for this March family road trip to Boston.
What I love about Anna’s Taqueria is that not only is it quick, the food is just superb. I almost always choose the chicken or steak super burrito. I’ve been enjoying these for over 20 years and their quality has never wavered. The interior and vibe are informal so the kids can be loud. Quesadillas are a hit with the kids and I always get a second burrito to go for later.
Anna’s is close to the Charles/MGH T stop of the Red Line. Head here and take the T back to the South Station stop.
This March family road trip to Boston is a huge hit. The kids absolutely loved the Children’s Museum. Poking around Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market satisfies those of every age, and who doesn’t love burritos?!
