Ice Cream in Plymouth

Summer’s here! Along with fried clams and lobster rolls, summer means ice cream here in New England. We are visiting seven favorite places for ice cream in Plymouth, Massachusetts. From homemade treats to seaside retreats, let’s dig in. Although Plymouth is a large town (the largest area-wise in the state) we are focusing on the harbor, with all (except one) of these ice cream options located on Water Street.

Ice cream is not only to be tasted but also to be touched.

Peaceful Meadows

A cup of Peaceful Meadows’ ice cream.

Ice cream on the South Shore means Peaceful Meadows. The main outpost of the three-store mini-chain is in Whitman, with an ice cream stand and cow barn. Plymouth’s location is within the Village Landing Marketplace, but the ice cream is just as good as the original. Choose from an array of homemade flavors or opt for a frappe instead. I cannot resist the cappuccino chunk and also find myself gravitating toward seasonal selections including the black raspberry chip. The frappes are also delicious, made from your choice of ice cream. Find them at 170 Water Street, right in the heart of Plymouth Harbor.

Ziggy’s

Digging in at Ziggy’s.

It’s time to get Ziggy with it, as the locals say! Ziggy’s offers a selection of flavors both hard and soft serve, but to me, Ziggy’s means a Zig-Zag! This is a choice of soft-serve ice cream with something tasty mixed in. I typically choose Kit Kats. Blended with perfection, each bite is summertime fun with ice cream and candy. Ziggy’s also offers fried food and other tourist-friendly fare. It is located at 120 Water Street

Fedele’s

Mmmmm….homemade chocolate sprinkles!

Continuing on our tour of ice cream in Plymouth is Fedele’s. Fedele’s is a two-for-one deal, as they are mainly a chocolate shop. And what scrumptious chocolate they make! Definitely stop in for a few bites of chocolate but in the summertime, it’s out to the ice cream window I go. I choose a soft-serve twist at Fedele’s. Here’s the catch though: order it with chocolate sprinkles. Why? Because they make their own and are “udderly” amazing! Fedele’s is also located in Village Landing also at 170 Water Street.

But some of us still choose the rainbow sprinkles.

Yogie’s

Summertime fun

Newer to Plymouth’s waterfront is Yogie’s. Yogie’s, like Ziggy’s and Pebbles, also serves a variety of food. My favorite ice cream treat at Yogie’’s is a flavored soft serve. It’s not just a flavor swirl here but they have interesting ice cream kinds, including salted caramel and pina colada. They are also known for their lobster rolls. Find Yogie’s Cafe at 80 Water Street.

Pebbles

Spoons up for Pebbles

Some visitors to Plymouth lament that the famed Plymouth Rock is actually a pebble! As a play on this, Pebbles restaurant is located right across the street! With outdoor seating near the Mayflower II, Pebbles serves fried food and chowder but is also known for its ice cream. My kids enjoy getting messy at Pebbles, chowing down on soft serve covered with sprinkles. Pebbles is located at 76 Water Street

Kilwins

A frappe at Kilwins

Kilwins is a national chocolate chain that also serves ice cream. I enjoy a coffee-flavored treat here; either a frappe or ice cream. It is one of the newer stores in Plymouth, as it is located in the same building as other seaside staples, including Fat Face, and Sea Bags. It will be hard to choose between chocolate and ice cream here, maybe get one of each. Kilwin’s is located at 150 Water Street.

Friendly’s

Gettin’ messy at Friendly’s.

Another national chain is Friendly’s. This is NOT on the waterfront but it is a good option as a Massachusetts-based restaurant that is open all year. If visiting Plymouth in the off-season, many of the above ice cream places are closed (save for Peaceful Meadows). Friendly’s is based in Wilbraham, and although there won’t be any surprises, they make good ice cream. I often choose the Vienna Mocha Chunk. It is located just a five-minute drive from the waterfront at 47 Long Pond Road.

This summer when looking for ice cream in Plymouth, make sure to check out these above excellent ice cream options! Each has its own specialty, so figure out what you desire before heading out, be it homemade from Peaceful Meadows, soft serve with delicious sprinkles at Fedele’s or a Zig-Zag at Ziggy’s!
