Merry Christmas! Here at Backyard Road Trips we’re starting the Christmas season very early or very late depending on if you are a half full or half empty kind of person. To celebrate the holiday, here’s a playlist to make sure to add a little jingle to your bells. This questionable Christmas mixtape is a little weird, a bit silly but all fun.
The Questionable Christmas Mixtape Begins
The Carole of the Bones starts off this mixtape with a Bone Thugs version of the instrumental classic. Dennis Wilson then performs a yuletide plea. John Denver sings my favorite of his songs “Please Daddy (Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas),” which in my household is a holiday tradition. Dylan’s “Must Be Santa” makes it hard to believe that this is the same Bob Dylan of “Desolation Row” or “Visions of Johanna.” Root Boy Slim’s “Christmas in K-Mart” should be a Christmas classic! “The mood ring counter is all a-glow.”
Bertie Higgins is the only reprise from A Very Merry Yacht Rock Christmas; his version of “Deck the Halls” is just so bad! B.B. King is a bit suggestive with “Back Door Santa” while the Simpsons boogie us under the mistletoe. Ben Folds tells a silly Santa tale. Sharon Jones’ “Ain’t No Chimneys in the Projects” is an excellent track. James Brown screams a ton after that. Martin Mull’s take on a hippie-era Christmas track is next. Speaking of silly, listen to Eric Cartman from South Park get an electric cattle prod for forgetting the lyrics to “O Holy Night.”
Side B- Questionable Christmas
“The Twelve Pains of Christmas” is one song that will be familiar to all. Who can forget “hangovas.” “All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth” takes the prize for the most annoying. Ernest sings a short version of “O Christmas Tree.” A popular annoying track is also by the Chipmunks. The Beach Boys sing about a kid taking a mall Santa’s beard off. Snoop Dogg’s ode to a Christmas feast of all kinds follows.
Guster’s version of “Mamacita, Donde Esta Santa Claus?” stays true to the original. George T. Bowers sings the theme to the little-watched television special Christopher the Christmas Tree. “Ol’ Fatso” digs at Santa. And Santa can exercise as he does the mambo. Count Sidney brings us a “Soul Christmas.” “Dominick the Donkey” is another annoying Christmas track. The Incan group Inca Son dash us through the snow.
From Will Vinton’s Christmas Special, the California Raisins sing “Rudolph.” Bill Cosby gives us a funky Christmas tune while the Jingle Bells spoof of “Batman smells” takes us closer to the end. Finally, David Hasselfhoff’s “The Christmas Song” is a straightforward rendition of the standard but sung by the Big D.
