The North Shore roast beef craze has migrated its way down to the South Shore over the past few years. The roast beef sandwich served a la North Shore style originated at Kelly’s in Revere. Thinly sliced rare roast beef is served on an onion roll in the popular “three-way” style, with mayo, bbq sauce, and cheese. The mini-chain Brother’s Roast Beef has taken this North Shore mainstay closer to home on the South Shore.
Brother’s Roast Beef stores extend from Malden to Kingston. The location closest to me is in Kingston. The building at 137 Main Street is a former Burger King situated just off of Route 3. From the outside, Brother’s is reminiscent of Burger King although bathed in a brown hue instead of blue. Inside though, the restaurant is appealing with comfortable seating, with a brown and white painted interior.
Roast Beef Sandwich at Brother’s
Each time I have gone to Brother’s I know exactly what I want: a super beef, three-way roast beef sandwich. Let me explain this Massachusetts roast beef lingo. The roast beef sandwich comes in three sizes, and get outta here with your “small, medium, and large.” The junior beef is the small, the regular beef the medium, and the super beef the large. In North Shore fashion, the super beef is served on an onion roll while the other two sizes are not. Authentic restaurants use Piantedosi Baking Company rolls from Malden for their roast beef sandwiches.
At Brother’s Roast Beef, their super beef is just as good as anything I’ve eaten in the North Shore. Actually, the South Shore has another great roast beef spot, Angelo’s, in Plymouth which also serves a phenomenal roast beef sandwich.
Brother’s has a large menu with an array of sandwiches, pizza, salads, and pasta to choose from. Along with their roast beef sandwich, Brother’s is also known for its pizza. Friends have recommended the pastrami sandwich to me as well (although it’s hard NOT to get the roast beef).

Oh man, now I am craving a Kelly’s Roast Beef sammich! I can’t say that I’ve ever had one on an onion roll (which is fine by me as I’m not really a fan of said rolls) but I’ve had many a delicious need-two-hands-to-hold-it roast beef sandwich at both their Saugus and Danvers locations. I’ve not tried any of the South Shore’s offerings yet but I should probably work on that!
