Schilling Beer Company, located on the banks of the Amonoosuc River in Littleton, New Hampshire, is the direct opposite of the breweries located in nondescript industrial parks throughout the land. The restaurant is located in an authentic former 18th-century grist mill with a state-of-the-art taproom situated right next door.
Littleton is a rarity in northern New Hampshire as it has a small but vibrant downtown, with mainstays such as Chutter’s, home to the world’s largest candy counter, and many restaurants and shops. There is a hip feel to this former mill town. Schilling Beer Company is located a block south of Meadow Street (the main drag) on Mill Street.
Dining In
My recommendation would be to immerse yourself in the full Schilling experience. This is not a place to simply pick up beer from. Make sure to stay for a meal. Dine either in the outdoor seating or inside the former grist mill. I’ve done both and have enjoyed both immensely.
During my latest visit with the kids in tow, we ate inside. Schilling’s beers are all of European roots. Under their own brand, you won’t find any IPAs or other American ale favorites. Although I enjoy their Resilience brand, in which they focus on the American side of things, such as IPAs, and stouts when here I opt for Schilling’s beer menu. I choose a few small beer pours of styles including lager, pilsner, and Saison.
Eating at Schilling Beer Company
For food, the salad and pizza are both fantastic. My favorite appetizer is the house greens. It’s nice to go to a brewery and be able to enjoy a really tasty and healthy salad. In the salad are cranberries, sunflower seeds, and walnuts buried within the greens served with a house-made vinaigrette. The pretzel is another appetizer I have had that is worth getting.
The larger dishes at Schilling are wood-fired pizzas. I have had an array of them, from the basic classic cheese to spectacular and intricate creations. For each, the pizza is cooked perfectly, with that wood-fired crunch accenting the slice. The fresh ingredients take center stage as it is hard not to eat a whole pie during one sitting.
Visiting Schilling
For beer to go, I like to venture uphill to the taproom. The modern space is truly spectacular. Guests can enjoy their beer outside overlooking the river or inside the taproom with expansive windows with clear views of the Amonoosuc River.
During my latest visit to Schilling Beer Company, I left with a four-pack of Alexandr, a Czech pilsner, and Poppy’s Moonship with Blackberries, a fruited gose.
While visiting New Hampshire, whether for a trip to Schilling or a family-friendly visit to the White Mountains, make sure that Schilling Beer Company is a destination for lunch or dinnertime!.
