In Memoriam: Thirty-Nine Court

This was written in late summer, only a short while later did I find out that Thirty-Nine Court was closing.

The number of fantastic dining options in Plymouth makes it a difficult choice when looking for a date night restaurant. Do I stick to tried and true favorites such as the Tasty, Dillon’s Local or Tavern on the Wharf? Or do I try somewhere new? My wife and I are only able to conjure up a date night a few times a year, so the decision is difficult. On our most recent date, we decided to try somewhere new to us, Thirty-Nine Court in downtown Plymouth.

Decor at Thirty-Nine Court

Driftwood Public House

To me, Thirty-Nine Court had big shoes to fill as this restaurant space formerly housed the storied Driftwood Public House. Driftwood could have been located in Haight-Ashbury, the hip San Francisco neighborhood. They were known for their beer menu and enticing food. They were also the Plymouth purveyors of the stuffed pretzel, a tradition that has been taken up by Tar Bar and, more recently, New World Tavern.

Before eating dinner here, I had been in once since the change of restaurants. Although I missed Driftwood’s hipster decor, I thought the new ownership had transformed the space nicely. The space is inviting with a gastropub feel. I came here for beers and pizza when Second Wind opened a winter location last winter.

Drinks

For our dinner, my wife and I were seated at a table for two. The classy space was perfect for a date night. Located in a nook in the room, it was a great table for conversation. After being impressed with our surroundings, what struck me next was the beer selection. Everything was local! Beers, including Stellwagen from Marshfield, Vitamin Sea from Weymouth, and Second Wind from Plymouth were all on tap. I ordered a Vitamin Sea IPA and my wife had a sour beer from Vitamin Sea.

Waiting for the drinks, we perused the menu. One comment we had heard was that the portions were rather small. A portion of the menu is smaller bites. We opted for the Brussels sprouts and a flatbread to share.

Dinner

When the Brussels sprouts arrived, we were thoroughly impressed. A massive mound of sprouts was brought to our table. This certainly was not a small bite! They tasted great! The mixture of the roasted garlic and the candied bacon in the dish complemented each other in a tasty combo. Both of us felt this was a wonderful way to start the meal.

For our pizza, we chose the Tartufo. At fourteen inches, it was plenty big to share. This was drizzled with olive and truffle oil and topped with mushrooms, prosciutto and roasted garlic. The pizza was perfectly cooked and the flavor of each ingredient stood alone by itself, but also created a medley of flavor which we both enjoyed.

Pizza time!

Between the pile of delicious Brussels sprouts, half a pizza, and a Vitamin Sea IPA, I was definitely not hungry anymore! Thirty-Nine Court serves a fine selection of food, from salads, pizzas, pasta, and bites, in a setting that is comfortable but elegant. Couple that with a stellar local craft beer selection, and Thirty-Nine Court is a restaurant that I would have definitely returned to but unfortunately cannot do so.
