Backyard Road Trips

Tavern on the Wharf Redux

Tavern on the Wharf, located in the heart of Plymouth’s Town Wharf, has become a go-to restaurant for me. Earlier in the year, I espoused Tavern on the Wharf as a favorite restaurant in the wintertime with hearty meals, especially their chicken and broccoli ziti. This seaside locale though is known as a summertime destination. Deservedly so, with a menu that is all-encompassing but puts an emphasis on seafood.

Buck a Shuck at Tavern on the Wharf

Enjoying Buck-a-Shuck on a warm summer day.

I’ve been here a few times this summer and have always enjoyed myself thoroughly. A new aspect of the restaurant that I recently discovered is the daily Buck a Shuck. As a bit of an oyster aficionado, news of the daily dollar oyster special is music to my ears. In June two friends and I gobbled down a dozen each while sitting outside on a beautiful sunny day.

Having a shuckin’ good time.

Presented on a large tray, these bivalve beauties are served with the traditional fixings: cocktail sauce, horseradish, and lemon. Pair these with a house beer from Second Wind or a Cloud Candy IPA from Mighty Squirrel. Nothing screams summer in Plymouth like slurping down a dozen of these and a draft beer.

For the Whole Family

Being a parent, I appreciate how incredibly kid-friendly Tavern on the Wharf is. My older son has joined me for an outdoor buck-a-shuck while he’s enjoying chicken tenders. I’ve also been here with my whole family and another family. The restaurant can easily accommodate four kids.

Kids (and adults) will like the sliders.

This summer has also marked my first experience in the open-air back patio of Tavern on the Wharf. The hostess brought my party of eight past the dining room and quite honestly I had no idea where we were going. The back patio has a rustic coastal vibe and also houses a second large bar.

Tacos

Tavern on the Wharf during the holiday season.

For this meal, I had to start with a dozen oysters yet again. For the main meal though, the Tavern’s tacos are a favorite of mine. The tacos are delicious. I prefer my fish tacos grilled, which is an option here. Mixing and matching on a “Taco Tuesday” which has a two for one taco special I will mix and match with cajun shrimp, Baja chicken, or steak and cheese. All are incredible.

Salads, Sliders and Chowder

Slip Slidin’ Away

Another meal that I have been partial to this summer at Tavern on the Wharf is the Ty Cobb Salad. Enjoying a good baseball reference, this is a tasty Cobb Salad. With chicken, hard-boiled eggs, and avocado, this salad is packed. The sliders are truly delish and you can’t leave without trying the chowder!

Chowder and a cocktail.

Even though the summer days are waning (sadly), there is more than enough time to make it to Tavern on the Wharf. Even when the Plymouth tourist crowds thin out, the Tavern is open all year round with a menu that is just as ideal in the winter as it is in the summer.

When you go

The chowder is a must!
