Local Roots

The most common phrase that customers associate with Plymouth’s Local Roots is “good vibes.” That is the perfect motto for this waterfront gem, as it is hard to feel stressed while enjoying breakfast, lunch, dinner, a drink, or a smoothie at Local Roots

Good vibes at Local Roots!

Local Roots opened last year at the heart of the pandemic. While this may have meant trouble for many restaurants, given its outdoor seating, the new restaurant has thrived.

Officially on island time.

In addition to the island vibe of Local Roots, music is a constant, either heard overhead on the speakers or performed live by one of the many phenomenal acts that play there. Their music lineup includes acclaimed singer-songwriter Carly Tefft, who is originally from Cape Cod but has since relocated to Nashville.

Local Roots in Plymouth

The name “Local Roots” has its own story. Owner Tina Myers is a local right here from Plymouth. After running previous restaurants, including Capone’s Prohibition Pub in both Weymouth and Pembroke, Tina and her husband are going back to her “roots” with this restaurant. Not only are they locals, but so is the food that they sell. Local produce is used in smoothies, bowls, and salads, and bread and fish are locally sourced, with seafood coming from Woods Seafood, located just across the street.

From healthy

With ocean views, prime people watching, and refreshing food and drink, Local Roots will certainly take you to the island. That is not a coincidence though, since Tina and her husband are part-time residents of Aruba in the off-season. They have taken the cuisine and atmosphere of Aruba and brought it home with them to Plymouth. Menu items such as the Cocowhip, acai bowls, and smoothies have been inspired by their island home.

Something for Everyone

Local Roots has also been able to bridge the gap with a wide customer demographic. From the post-yoga crew from Nelson Park to tourists out for a quick bite, from folks looking for a healthy smoothie and salad, to those who want comfort food of chicken wings or chicken and waffles, Local Roots truly has something for everyone. Certainly, the focus is on healthy and local choices, but some menu items such as the Joe Bag O’ Donuts, fresh homemade doughnuts on Sunday mornings, are a perfect treat. This Sunday tradition coincides with the classic car show held every Sunday morning during the summer across the street in the parking lot of East Bay Grill. Many classic car enthusiasts run over to Local Roots for a cup of coffee or a bite before or after the show.

Post-beach or after work it’s a great spot to unwind with a cocktail or a mixed drink. There is an array of outdoor dining options to choose from: tables, high tops and even rocking chairs!

Chow Time!

What to order?

A must-try is the strawberry margarita! This is made with fresh strawberries and is simply delicious. There’s nothing like sipping this drink on a summer day with a breeze coming off of the water. Another favorite of mine is the Monte Christo. One word of warning, this sandwich is huge! It’s the perfect mix of breakfast and lunch as it is stuffed with turkey, ham, and provolone and served on French toast, complemented by maple syrup. Pair this with a craft beer or a domestic favorite.

Hungry yet? I told you the Monte Christo is huge.

One menu item that is especially popular with kids, but is guilt-free for the rest of us is the Cocowhip. This is a vegan, and dairy-free, ice cream treat that is actually made with coconut water! Local Roots has an exclusive license to carry Cocowhip which originated in Australia. Try it by itself or with toppings.

The strawberry margarita, taste the freshness!

In addition to their smoothies, mixed drinks, and sandwiches, try some of these unforgettable menu options. Their Buddha Bowl is made for vegans and loaded with ingredients such as quinoa, baby spinach, and chickpeas. Their chicken salad, pastrami, and turkey gobbler sandwiches are always popular. For breakfast, the western omelet includes six eggs, and their eggs benedict will satisfy the biggest appetite. For a decadent start to the day, try a crab cake benedict or a chorizo burrito!

Clearly, Local Roots promotes a healthy lifestyle with many vegan options, salads, and smoothies, and the good vibes overflow with live music, tiki drinks, and hearty menu options to boot. It has a laid-back, come-as-you-are feel, as it is family and dog friendly but doubles as a place to stop at on a night out and is even popular for special events.  It is open seven days a week, seasonally from mid-April to mid-December, and is located at 186 Water Street in the heart of Plymouth, Massachusetts.
