Harbor View Hotel

Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard is the grande dame of the island. The classic hotel built in 1891 is the epitome of elegance. Located only a ten-minute walk from downtown Edgartown and across from picturesque Lighthouse Beach, its location is superb. On a recent visit to Martha’s Vineyard, my family and I decided to treat ourselves and booked two nights at the magnificent hotel. It was one of the most splendid lodging experiences I have ever had.

Bikes are available for your use at the Harbor View Hotel.

I was familiar with the hotel as I had been in the lobby before and also frequented Lighthouse Beach each time I’ve been on the island. Never would I have thought though that I would have the opportunity to stay there. The Harbor View Hotel majestically looks out over the harbor (hence the name). The grand facade is striking but at the same time blends into the Edgartown setting seamlessly.

First Impressions

Rolling luggage our to the hotel.

Upon checking in, the hotel staff was courteous and friendly. The lobby was comfortable, with its wood decor. As it was April, a fire was lit in the sitting area. The hotel is vast, with the main building and many townhomes and other style abodes on the property. Our room key was for floor two in the old hotel. I was excited to be staying in the original building.

Our Room at the Harbor View Hotel

Let’s find our room!

Our room was welcoming and large. Staying with my two children, this was much larger than a typical two bed hotel room. First of all, both beds were king-sized! (My younger son still sleeps in the pack and play that we brought.) The mattress and pillows were the perfect balance of firm and plush, which led to the best night’s sleep.

What a room!

At the base of the picture window was a window seat that my kids enjoyed looking out of, while doing puzzles and playing with their toys. The bathroom included high-end soaps and luxurious robes. Even the body wash was the perfect scent, strong but not overly potent.

The window seat was a hit.

Another feature that my whole family enjoyed was the balcony. Our room was located in the back of the hotel which meant that the view did not overlook the beach, but the balcony made up for that. (Not all the rooms in the front have balconies.) The weather was gorgeous for our three days, in the 60s and 70s. Enjoying a beer on the balcony was a perfect way to end the first night. And in the morning, letting the kids play out there was a fun way to begin another day.

Having fun on the balcony!

The Hotel Grounds

Nooks and crannies everywhere.

The pool on the grounds was not open yet, but the landscaping staff was creating perfection, making sure that not one square inch of the property was askew. Each piece of mulch was straight! Next to the pool is a lawn where my son enjoyed throwing around a baseball.

Rambling around the grounds.

Due to Covid, unfortunately the restaurant and bar were closed during our visit. Instead of sipping a drink on the enormous wraparound porch that overlooks the harbor, my wife, my sons, and I simply enjoyed rocking in the chairs near each other, enjoying the view. During one morning, I was able to spend a few minutes alone on a rocking chair simply soaking in the moment, utterly fantastic. Make sure to take some time to explore the hotel and note the historic Vineyard photos that line the hallways of it.

Rocking away the afternoon.

Harbor View Hotel receives top-notch accolades. With good reason, this hotel is the perfect mix of elegant and comfortable. Each little touch, from the wraparound porch to the stunning view, was expertly executed leading to an unforgettable getaway.

And the back side.

If you’d like to stay and don’t have a car, no worries! There are Mercedeses available to borrow, free of charge. Also, there are bikes to venture out on. At the front desk, my kids both were given Harbor View Hotel sunglasses which they absolutely love. We will definitely be back!
