Backyard Road Trips

Kogi Bar and Grill

Plymouth’s restaurant scene is vibrant. I’ve said it many times, as Backyard Road Trips has spent the early part of 2021 dining in and taking out from the town’s best restaurants. While many of the restaurants featured so far are known for burgers, burritos, and beer, we are mixing it up with a Korean restaurant, Kogi Bar and Grill.

Kogi- Korean food and Sushi

Not only does Kogi serve superb Korean cuisine but also, in my opinion, has the best sushi in town. I have been a regular customer here since they opened in 2015 and have tried many menu items, including the bulgogi burrito, scallion pancake, and the Kogi fries, which include cheese, beef, and hot sauce on top.

Try Kogi Bar and Grill- in Plymouth!

Typically my order from Kogi consists of crab rangoon for an appetizer, bibimbap with chicken, and many sushi rolls. The crab rangoon looks similar to the fried shells stuffed with a cream cheese and crab concoction, but these are many times better. And the sauce that is served with them is delicious.

Bibimbap

Eating inside the restaurant I typically opt for the Stone Pot Dolsot which is essentially the same as the bibimbap but served in a stone pot, so it still is cooking even at your table. This adds a crunchy texture to the rice in the dish.

Beautiful Bibimbap

With two young kids, and due to the pandemic, taking out is often my only option for restaurant eating. This being said, bibimbap is the way to go. It is a rice-based dish with many other ingredients including spinach, carrots, bean sprouts, and mushrooms. My choice of protein is often chicken, although the beef is also excellent. It is all topped with a fried egg. Served with it is a hot sauce. Mix all the ingredients together, add the sauce and eat with chopsticks. It has a variety of tastes and textures and is a fantastic dish.

Sushi at Kogi

Kogi is my choice for the best sushi in Plymouth. The pieces are large with thick slices of fish. One simple roll, the Alaskan, is a must-try at Kogi. An Alaskan roll is a traditional seaweed roll with rice with a slice of raw salmon and avocado inside. This is where the fish used at Kogi stands out. Taste the freshness!

Sushi time!

Their Philadelphia Roll is also excellent. I opt for the raw salmon instead of the cooked that is often used. The cream cheese in the Philly roll is unobtrusive. Only a small accompanying taste, not a huge dollop of it which can sometimes be the case with these rolls.

Other favorites include the yellowtail scallion and the spicy tuna roll. With tuna, whitefish, salmon, and avocado, the specialty Plymouth Rock roll is also a favorite.

Beer Pairing

During my latest take-out meal from Kogi, I paired my meal with Troegs Nugget Nectar, a seasonal amber ale that is released annually in late winter/early spring. Just like the groundhog, to me, it’s a sure sign that warmer weather is on its way.

What a meal!

For any fan of Korean food, make sure to try Kogi Bar and Grill at 8 Court Street in Plymouth. If you’ve never tried Korean food, make it a point to. You will not be disappointed!
