Backyard Road Trips

The Pantry at Avenue N

Located inside a renovated mill building in the center of the village of Rumford, Rhode Island, is Avenue N. Avenue N is a popular restaurant serving apps, pizza, and fish. Next to Avenue N is a market and deli, run by the restaurant, called The Pantry at Avenue N. After a recent trip to Roger Williams Zoo, the Pantry at Avenue N was the perfect stop-off for a quick bite and a few provisions to go.

Running to the Pantry at Avenue N!

My wife and I had to visit the pint-sized market in shifts since our younger son was asleep in the car. My older son though didn’t mind as he was the tour guide for both of us.

What’s available at the Pantry at Avenue N

One of the first items I saw at the pantry put a smile on my face right away. It is Grammy Schartner’s jam. We pass Schartner Farm each year in North Conway, New Hampshire, on the way to the condo in Bartlett that we frequent. Last year we even picked strawberries. They have a drive-through stand, where you leave the money for the jam in a box on the honor system. There is a large variety of jams, and all are simply amazing. Grammy Schartner’s jams are not too sweet, a bit tart, and are perfect on everything.

Other products available at the Pantry at Avenue N are a variety of essentials and independent brand specialty foods. These include items such as pickles, salsa, and maple syrup. Many are local brands. They also have their own pickled vegetables. As a quick market, the Pantry also sells milk, eggs, and vegetables.

The Deli

Danny was excited for the chips.

In addition to groceries, the Pantry at Avenue N has a wide selection of prepared foods. There is also a deli with made-to-order sandwiches. My wife and I split a house-made honey brined turkey panini. This was incredible. This includes Applewood bacon, Muenster cheese, and arugula on sourdough. There is a variety of sandwiches to choose from, as well as soups and pizzas.

Rumford Center

The Pantry at Avenue N was the perfect after zoo stop. It is located not too far off of Route 195 in Rumford, Rhode Island, close to the Massachusetts border. Rumford is a village of East Providence. Its mill location was visually appealing, as I always love to see the old industrial giants repurposed and saved for posterity.

You can’t miss RumfordR Center.

The Pantry at Avenue N is located at 20 Newman Avenue in Rumford. Just look for the multi-story factory building with the large sign reading “Rumford Center.”  You can’t miss it!
