Box Pick #2: The Sagamore Inn

It’s time once again to pick out of the box of destiny! Last summer, Drew Burnett and I resurrected the box that I used as a kid to choose a restaurant to eat at. (For the full explanation, check out the article on the first “Box Pick” at Brookside Cafe in Preston, Connecticut.) In short, the rules were that we had to go to whatever restaurant that was chosen from an extensive list of random restaurants whose names were put into a wooden box. Picking for the second time, Danny reached in and chose the Sagamore Inn in Bourne, Massachusetts.

Most of the choices in the box were put there in my youth. Yes, some have been added in more recent times, but they are primarily from my first fifteen years. Although the Sagamore Inn is only a twenty-minute drive from my current home, it was added to the box in the original list of restaurants, since it was a frequent dinner choice when visiting family friends in Sagamore for the annual summer trip.

With Covid travel restrictions, getting Drew up to Plymouth proved to be difficult. After a few months of trying to figure out a way for him to visit without quarantining, just like Arnold Skaaland and Bob Backlund, we threw in the towel. Instead of Drew accompanying me to the Sagamore Inn, Danny came along instead.

For Danny, this was the first restaurant we had eaten inside of for about a year (and one of the only ones for me too). Given that fact, Danny was very excited for our guys’ night at the Sagamore Inn. The inn is located on Route 6A on the Bourne/Sandwich town line. It looks like a large house painted white with green shutters from the outside.

The interior is pleasant and the service is friendly. It is a long-running establishment that has been a family favorite for years. The decor is just as I remember it with wooden tables, lots of windows and pictures on the wall. The ceiling has a unique design with ornamentation.  With a large menu, it will please any eater. I too was very excited to be out to eat and had real trouble figuring out what to order.

Time for Dinner

Danny chose a cheese pizza and milk. I wanted so many different items. Although I was tempted by the appetizer sampler, I opted for the fried mozzarella instead. Golden triangles filled with mozzarella with a marinara dipping sauce, even Danny enjoyed them!

My entree was the Broiled Seafood Dinner: lobster, scallops, haddock, and shrimp topped with breadcrumbs. It satisfied my craving with a tasty combination of seafood. I ordered it with fries, a side salad, and Brussels sprouts. On a pleasantly nostalgic note, a salad and vegetable came with the meal, not a la carte, as is often the case these days. (This was a ton of food–I guess I didn’t need the app!) Danny took home much of his pizza, but he really liked it.

The waitstaff was attentive and great with Danny. Nearby diners enjoyed his banter with me as we ate. And a few stopped to say hello. Crayons were given to him too which was a big hit. We played a few rounds of tic tac toe before the food came.

If you go..

Overall, our visit to the Sagamore Inn was a great success. Too bad that Drew couldn’t join us but we understood. The Sagamore Inn is located at 1131 Route 6A in Sagamore.
