The Tasty is hands down one of Plymouth’s most amazing restaurants. With creative dishes, a cool atmosphere, and a stellar drink menu, the Tasty is a must-visit for every foodie in town. The Tasty’s menu is ever-changing but always delicious. Opened in 2016 by husband and wife team Mike and Nina Peters, it immediately received rave reviews. In addition to being co-owner, Mike is also head chef. Prior experience for this team includes Plymouth’s East Bay Grill for Chef Mike and the legendary Grill 23 in Boston for Nina.
Their menu changes, but some items are mainstays. Nina explains, “We have a couple of addictive items that never leave our menu; otherwise, it does change weekly as we try to source locally and seasonally.” Whatever is on the menu you can expect a tremendous amount of flavor provided by fresh, often locally sourced, ingredients.
Starters and Sides at The Tasty
Items that can be expected on every menu include the wings, the Nori fries, and the Brussels sprouts. For a side dish, the Brussels sprouts are simply fantastic. The current rendition of the Brussels sprouts is cooked with a coconut sweet chili sauce, crushed peanuts, toasted sesame, and coconut flakes. Regarding the Brussels sprouts, Nina elaborates,” They are very ’Tasty,’ but honestly, it doesn’t matter what prep we choose for the Brussels. They’re almost always a staple on every table. If we removed Brussels from the menu, we’d probably get some pretty nasty letters.”
The other side that is a personal favorite of mine is the Nori fries. Nori fries are thin-cut french fries (a la McDonald’s) that are cooked with aioli and toasted sesame and nori. Nori is a kind of seaweed that is often found in Japanese dishes. The gochujang mayo dipping sauce that comes with it is the perfect accompaniment to the fries. Just as Nina says, “Our Nori Fries can easily become a habit.”
The wings are an all-the-time app. These are baked first, fried second, and are highlighted with a toss into a blackberry buffalo sauce with Great Hill blue cheese. Mmmmm!
“En” to the Entrees
For entrees, some of my favorites include the salmon, which is often found on the menu, and the gumbo which I tried recently. On other visits, I have opted for steak or chicken dishes which have always been superb.
Although I have only been to the Tasty once for brunch, the breakfast burrito that I had was tremendous, hands down the best I have ever had. Each bite was perfectly crafted. The beer menu at the Tasty is limited but well selected. Typically local brews from Mayflower and Second Wind are available as well as other local favorites including Stony Creek from Connecticut and Narragansett from Rhode Island. Although I am not often a mixed drink fan, their cocktails are awesome.
On Tuesdays, the Tasty hosts Noodle Nights. Chef Mike enjoys cooking with Asian flavors and puts his own spin on classic Asian noodle dishes from around the continent such as Dan Dan Noodles and lo mein. Just as on other days, the menu is ever-changing but Tuesday’s is always noodle-centric. Nina explains Mike’s Noodle Night inspiration, “My husband, Mike, loves to cook with Asian ingredients and techniques. I’m obsessed with the food, and Noodle Night has garnered quite a following over the years.” I can attest to the fact that Noodle Night is amazing. A recent order included the Dan Dan noodles and a peppered steak over rice. Both absolutely delicious, so flavorful.
A Tasty addition to the Plymouth Dining Scene
Since its opening, the Tasty has become a true staple in Plymouth’s culinary scene. It is a comfortable restaurant but at the same time, you know you’re out on the town when dining here. It would not be out of place in a bigger city such as Boston or Providence.
Regarding the Tasty’s place in the Plymouth community, Nina proclaims, “When we opened The Tasty, the intention was to feed our community, friends, neighbors, as we would our family: wholesome, flavorful food, with an ever-evolving menu. We were not interested in being a special occasion place, but a spot where people could come several times a week, and find friendly faces and a menu always with something new. Our hope is when you are at The Tasty, even if you’re dining alone, you feel like you’re in the company of friends.” Truly, the Tasty is a special place and Plymouth is lucky to have it right here. The Peters live in town and care deeply about their home community.
The Peters focus on local ingredients with flavor that is unforgettable! The ingredients on the menu reflect the season and local availability with ties to area farmers, vendors, and purveyors. They include Plato’s Harvest from Middleboro, Skinny Dip Farm from Westport, and Revival Farm in Plympton.
The Tasty is a small restaurant that is big on flavor. It is a gastropub whose menu is influenced by Asian and other cuisines. It is hard to go wrong here, so order to your heart’s delight, it’s bound to be a good choice. The Tasty is also available for takeout (as I did on this post). The Tasty is located at 42 Court Street in downtown Plymouth.
A Tasty Beer to Pair
During a recent take-out experience from the Tasty during their Noodle Night, I paired the Dan Dan noodles and peppered steak with a “tasty” beer from Trillium, the Legroom Double IPA.
We have dined here many times and never been disappointed. The salmon is to die for! Nina is a welcoming and engaging hostess who makes everyone feel at home. All this while Mike is in the kitchen doing what he does best…putting out those outstanding dishes. Great job guys, keep up the good work.
Dear Mike and Nina. What a great article. You’re a beautiful couple and have done an amazing job with the Tasty. Congratulations. I’m anxious to come visit some one of these days. Best wishes, Eleanor Metro.
