Backyard Road Trips

Another Fun Day in Sandwich

Similar to a recent trip to Cambridge to go to a natural history museum and taqueria, this trip also didn’t start out to be a Backyard Road Trip. Living in Plymouth, Sandwich (MA) is an easy excursion for me. With beaches, museums, and restaurants, it has much to offer the family. On a windy March day, we decided to cross the bridge to venture out for another fun day in Sandwich at Father’s Kitchen and Taphouse and the Sandwich Glass Museum

Father’s Kitchen and Taphouse

Since Father’s opened in 2015, I had been wanting to try it. Known for their beer selection, I was excited to go. Their beer selection did not disappoint. With 41 beers on draft, I chose a flight of four: Maine Beer Company’s Lunch, the Gateway IPA by the recently closed 6A Brewing in Bourne, a Four Quarters IPA, and Ella by Deciduous. It was a very tasty flight of IPAs. I was super impressed to see beers such as Deciduous and Four Quarters on the menu.

Both my wife and I opted for the grilled cheese and tomato soup. For a side, she had broccoli and I chose sweet potato fries. The grilled cheese was made with two different kinds of cheese and the tomato soup was highly recommended. The decor was pub/tavern, with a heavy emphasis on wood. There are two choices of seating, in the tavern area or the dining room. We chose the dining room. Overall, Father’s was a great dining experience. The food was stellar and the beer list was top-notch.

Afterward, we figured to try the Green Brian Nature Center and Jam Kitchen. It said open online, but it was not the case.
The Sandwich Glass Museum

Sandwich Glass Museum

I mentioned the idea of the Sandwich Glass Museum. It’s a museum that I have always wanted to go to but never did. Being March, it wasn’t too packed. The glassblowing demonstration was awesome and highly entertained my older son. After that, he completed the scavenger hunt through the whole museum. It’s a perfect way to keep kids on the move and excited at a museum of glass and the history of glassmaking in Sandwich.

The displays take the visitor through time, with pieces presented in chronological order. There was a special exhibit with pop art glass from Ricky Berenstein. My son’s favorite part was the Rube Goldberg-esque contraption where marbles choose different paths when manipulated with a lever. This was all made of glass. At the end of the museum, Danny was so happy because he earned a prize for completing the scavenger hunt. It was a bag of three marbles.
