Backyard Road Trips

off to Vitamin Sea

Vitamin Sea Brewing

Call me a sucker for the latest “it” beer, but I feel constantly compelled to try it. I have been hearing much hype about Weymouth’s (Massachusetts) Vitamin Sea Brewing since before they were a brick and mortar operation through Mass Brew Bros. Since opening last year, the brewery has been receiving much positive feedback. Couple that with a brewery that is currently only open on Saturdays, with beer available almost solely at their facility and it’s the perfect recipe for the hype machine. Backyard Road Trips had to investigate is this was heralded.

I was lucky to try a Vitamin Sea beer recently at The Raw Bar at Island Creek Oyster Farm, but only after a good friend tried their Summer IPA and strongly encouraged us to go did I make the trip. See, as much as I like good beer, I am averse to long lines and to some of the atmosphere that goes along with it. At the same time, as earlier stated, I feel almost compelled to try the product. (What a dilemma!)

The Journey to Vitamin Sea

On a warm day in late July, my buddy Mike and I took the trip (no kids this time) up to the industrial space in Weymouth, Massachusetts. I had been here before, to Barrel House Z, located just a few warehouse docks away.

From the outside, Vitamin Sea looks like a typical warehouse. One building has a lovely seafaring mural though. The taproom is adorned with a gigantic logo of theirs. Once inside, the taproom is open and inviting. It is dark, full of communal tables a la European beer gardens with a surfing movie projected on one wall. There are two lines, one for pours and one for cans to go.

Look who we ran into? (dog and kid not pictured)
After running into other friends, we hit up the pour line. There were many IPAs on the list along with a sour, a stout and a cream ale. Much of the brouhaha I have heard has dealt with IPAs. My first was A Quiet Noise, a very enjoyable IPA. It was easy-drinking at 6 %, smooth with nice mouthfeel. The second was More Cans, Less Cans, another tasty IPA.

After the second beer, it was off to the can line we went. Unfortunately, they had sold out of the Due North but purchased the Station 4.  Quite honestly, although fresh cans of unfiltered beer are similar to drinking out of the tap, in my mind, you can’t beat drinking right from the source. When I decided to crack open a can of the Station on a beautiful afternoon in my actual backyard, I was expecting a smooth, juicy IPA. What I got though was the best beer I’ve had from Vitamin Sea. The flavors were perfectly mixed. It was smooth, it was juicy, but more than that, it was simply delicious. I wish I had purchased more! (The can art too is very attractive too)

Worth the hype and nice-looking cans!

In Conclusion,

Vitamin Sea lived up to the hype. They have a very cool seaside/surfside, pseudo hipster vibe that is at the same time welcoming to everyone. As a good brewery should, there were folks of all ages, from kids to the older set, and of course, many dogs. It was an in-the-know brewery as patrons were donning their Treehouse and Bissell Brothers shirts. Their logo represented that relaxed, beachside vibe, reminiscent of a surfboard brand. I’ll be happy when they expand their hours since having another great spot close to my own backyard is a really good thing. It’s just that the ability to go only on a Saturday can be difficult. I’m already excited to visit again!
