I’m not much of a shopper. Truthfully I’d rather be out exploring the great outdoors and afterward enjoying a craft beverage. For a store to strike me, it has to be special. Dually, antique stores usually give me the willies. Porcelain dolls that may come to life or a chest of drawers with dust an inch thick are just not my thing. Don’t get me started on the musty smell! The Primitive Crow Antiques in Bozrah, Connecticut, is the antithesis of that; it bucks the trend and thwarts any image of what an antique store is.
Much More Than Just an Antique Store
When Beth Coletti opened up the original Primitive Crow, an antiques and primitives home decor store, in Woodstock, Connecticut, I knew it would be a success. See, I’ve known Beth for exactly 35 years. The first five of those I stayed with her while my parents worked almost every day. Her son, Adam, and I have been best friends since. As a kid, I distinctly remember Beth constantly rearranging her home’s furniture and the rooms’ country home decor. This was in stark contrast to my own childhood home whose furniture is still in the same configuration as it was in 1983. When she decided to open a store, I knew that it would be special since she has an impeccable eye for spotting the best antiques.
The Primitive Crow Moves Closer to Home
Recently, the Primitive Crow migrated south to Bozrah, much closer to Coletti’s home. With a bigger space, she has been able to not only have more room to display her wares, but also to create a community event center. She hosts such various programs as craft festivals, such as the one that occurred over Columbus Day Weekend, Paint Nights, and a day with Santa. The decor and displays change with the season. For instance, during December, Christmas trees are glowing, and the arrangements are in the colors of the holiday.
Seeking Spirits
One of the most popular events is the program Seeking Spirits which is a collaboration with TAPS. TAPS is best known as the group on the popular hit television series, Ghost Hunters. Each of the first two events uncovered some eeriness, but at the latest, which occurred in October, a voice was caught on tape, an object moved, and footsteps were clearly heard. Beth has even generously asked me to do a book signing, coordinating with the TAPS events. TAPS is coming back to Primitive Crow on January 12th. Register online to reserve your spot!
Yes, there are antiques for sale, but that’s only the start of it. She sells top quality crafty products such as Thompson’s Candles, Primitive Crow memorabilia, and books. The way that Beth displays the items is inviting and attractive. Walking into this store is more like an invitation to a cozy home. The next time you are in eastern Connecticut, visit the Primitive Crow. You won’t walk away empty handed!
