When I am in Connecticut and the leaves start to change, Woodstock is a must-visit for me, for my annual autumnal pilgrimage up Route 169. It’s where life is a little less hectic and the pace is just a little slower. Woodstock Orchards fulfills the need for autumn in my life.
Woodstock, Connecticut is most certainly the quintessential autumn destination in southern New England. A bucolic town nestled into the northeastern corner of the state, it provides leaf peepers all they crave, and more. Sure, the main route through town (Route 169) looks as if it could be an advertisement for the whole region as it meanders past the town’s postcard-worthy green bordered by stately Woodstock Academy, a white church and adjacent old burial ground. Trees along the drive are perfect to witness autumn ablaze in reds, yellows, and oranges. Woodstock is much more than a drive-through town though as it has numerous small shops, many which feature country home decor, romantic inns, and restaurants.
Most that venture to the Quiet Corner on lazy autumn afternoons are looking for a tangible bite of the season. Woodstock Orchards, located at 494 Route 169 offers just this. Customers can choose to pick-your-own apples (as well as other fruit) or visit the farm market which includes fresh produce, their own apple cider and an assortment of pumpkins and gourds. No trip through the town is complete without a stop here. Oh, and do try the cider doughnuts!
