Top Five: Favorite Chicken Wings

Chicken wings have universal appeal. No matter who you’re talking to. Most people like them (except my father, but that’s another story). It may have to do with the fact it’s a pretty basic dish. I mean it’s just chicken on a bone. The variety aspect though, makes it appeal to a cast of thousands. From those who want wings so hot that they cry, sweat, and cough at the same time to those who prefer them with a sweet sauce, there’s a flavor for everyone (again, except my dad). Here are recommendations for five of my favorite chicken wings.

The article focuses on my two hometowns of sorts. Four from Plymouth, Massachusetts, and one from my original hometown of Norwich, Connecticut.

Speedwell Tavern

Delicious wings from Speedwell Tavern

These are awesome wings and among my favorite, not only in  Plymouth but of all times. The flavor varieties include Thai Peanut, Garlic Parmesan, and Buffalo. My three favorites are (not in any order) the Garlic Parm, Gold Digger Carolina BBQ, and the Honey BBQ. The Honey BBQ combines the best of an amazing barbecue sauce sweetened with the honey. Utterly delicious. The wings are meaty, and I always opt for bone-in. I like mine medium heat, just enough to have a kick, but without sacrificing taste for heat. Speedwell Tavern is located at 47 Main Street in Plymouth.

Lucioso’s Pub

Another top wing spot- Lucioso’s

Another favorite of mine in Plymouth is Lucioso’s Pub. Perched over the Town Brook inside the Plimoth Grist Mill, Lucioso’s is perfect for everyone, from the oldest patrons to the youngest and everyone in between. Whenever I visit or order take out, I have to start with the wings. My favorites are the Old Bay dry rub a Garlic Parmesan (there may be a theme here). Old Bay is a seasoning not often found in New England but is a perfect accompaniment to a chicken wing. Flavorful with delicious wing options, Lucioso’s is definitely a great place for wings. It is located at 6 Spring Lane in Plymouth.

Dillon’s Local

Awesome wings at Dillon’s Local

Dillon’s Local is truly a fabulous restaurant. I haven’t had a meal here that I didn’t love. Favorites of mine include their fish and chips, seafood risotto, and chorizo hash for brunch. As part of a recent take out order, I included wings as an appetizer. The tender, meaty wings were accompanied by an excellent dipping sauce. You can’t go wrong at Dillon’s and the wings just reinforced my theory even more. Dillon’s Local can be found at 21 South Park Avenue in Plymouth.

Piantedosi’s Butcher Shop

Piantedosi’s wings + my BBQ sauce

Typically I wouldn’t count a butcher shop under a “best of” category but I had to proselytize about their wings. On a recent order that included a large array of meats, five pounds of chicken wings were included. They were huge (and raw)! I added a simple mixture of BBQ sauce and a salt and pepper rub. I grilled the wings until they were firmly cooked through and then slathered them a second time with the sauce. Piantedosi’s meaty wings and my sauce created an amazing taste treat. Piantedosi’s is located at 282 Court Street in Plymouth.

These Guys Brewing Company

Box ‘o wings from These Guys in Norwich

Which one of these is not like the others? The first four are from Plymouth; this entry comes from my hometown of Norwich, Connecticut. These Guys Brewing Company opened up a few years ago and has helped spearhead a revival of downtown Norwich. This is a brewpub, but the food is flavorful, adventurous, and downright delicious. I recently ordered the Brown Sugar Buffalo wings. Wow!! The combination of sweetness and tanginess of the buffalo mixed with a little heat to create the perfect wing. Unlike some restaurants, there are only two options (currently) of wing flavor. These Guys replaces choice with taste; try these immediately! These Guys Brewing is located at 78 Franklin Street in Norwich.

Whether you’re in the Plymouth or the Norwich area, these five fine establishments serve some of my favorite chicken wings around. They will satiate even the pickiest wing connoisseur.
